When FSU’s on Offense
Let’s face it. This is not the same FSU offense that started the season. It’s not even close. Given the coaching staff’s seeming preference for James Blackman, we will get exactly what we think – big-play ability that never really materializes, a frantic offense with harried decision-making, and a heavy reliance on Cam Akers. Syracuse’s defense will be one of the “better” ones we’ve seen, but that doesn’t mean that it’s very good. By SP+, it’s 49th (compare to FSU’s 73rd). Their DEs are very good, but their DTs are not. Look for FSU to scheme around this and let the defense open big holes in the B-gaps. If Briles & Clements can get the correct side called, Cam should have a big day.
When FSU’s on Defense
Syracuse’s offense isn’t good. At all. In fact, this is a case of a stoppable force meeting a movable object. We’re still not 100% sure that Tommy DeVito will be able to start at quarterback, so you may see senior Clayton Welch get some playing time. While the Orange don’t run very well (2.9 YPC), they do keep around a 50/50 run/pass ratio. Expect Syracuse to run with all available backs – whether running back or quarterback. Through the air, Trishton Jackson is their #1 receiver, with 6 touchdowns on the season.
If I’ve said it once, I’ve said it 1000 times. If I ever see another Aguayo on this team, I might get sick. Heck, if I see him on the field again, I’ll be unhappy. He should never see the field again unless he’s playing XFL.
Sterling Hofrichter is the do-almost-everything for the Orange. He’s averaging 45 yards/punt, handles kickoffs, and kicks the longer field goals. For shorter ones, Andre Szmyt (Schmidt) is 8/10.
John: 28-27 FSU. FSU finds their four minute offense again, similar to NC State. Injuries on defense keep a bad Syracuse team close.
Cory: 31-23 FSU. The calls for Willie Taggart’s head have not gone unheard on this team. This will be a horrible, sloppy game. FSU leans heavily on Cam and gets back to .500. Everyone exits homecoming week with the same opinions they took into it. Ricky Aguayo trots on the field for a field goal, Doak gets so loud with boos that a timeout is called and Ricky is replaced by a walk-on who nails the kick.
Mike: 34-20 FSU It’s unclear if Syracuse quarterback Tommy DeVito will be able to go on Saturday, which would be a huge blow to the Orange. This is a must-win contest for Florida State, as it hosts the only team in the ACC without a conference win. It’s worth noting that Syracuse has allowed 35 sacks — the most in the entire country. In ACC play, the Orange average just 12 points per game. Syracuse has never won in Tallahassee.
